Re: Columbia Slough Enviornmental Improvment

Dear Ms Lucas:

Table 1, page 28 of the report sent to you earlier lists the wildlife most common in the Rivergate area. An additonal list of small birds, mammals, amphibians and reptiles that can be expected to use the area is being prepared for you.

The earlier report also lists fish in the area on page 69. On this list we would not expect ot find the first 14 fish or numbers 24, 27, 28, 33, 34, 42 and few if any, sculpins in waters within the North Peninsula.

Sand filling north and west of Smith and Bybee Lakes and in and to the west of Ramsey Lake has converted 1,600 acres of wildlife habitat to flat, bare sand. If buildings and industry are developed on this land, about the only remaining wildlife will be English sparrows and Norway rats.

The shaded area of the map on page 71 in the earlier report covers about 900 acres of land and 1,160 acres of water. We believe screening this area from the proposed surrounding industry with trees, and the addition of proper wildlife food plants will permit retention of wild animal populaitons in this section of the Rivergate area. Maintenance of natural vegetation along most of the slough in Pen I and Pen II would also maintain habitat for small birds and mammals.

A water contol structure near the mouth of Columbia Slough would prevent flooding of the land and lakes and permit better wildlife and fish production than is now possible in the area.

Much of the recreation area shown on Port Plans is for a golf course, race tracks, open park area, the Exposition compatible with wildlife or wildlife-oriented recreation.

Enclosed is a report on wildlife uisng Sauvie’s Island lands and waters.

I do hope this information will be of help. If I can be of further assistance please let me know,.

Sincerly,
