The Port of Portland, created February 11, 1891, is located on the Northern Portland Peninsula at the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia Rivers. Port businesses include air and marine facilities. The U.S. exports close to 43 percent of worldwide grain shipments, of which moves through the Portland area by barge or rail.

Although the Port historically has commanded a strong economic presence in the Pacific Northwest, it faces stiff competition from other Pacific Rim ports. In order for the Port to capture a sizable portion of the import-export market, officials believe it must expand. Port expansion, often accompanied by pollution and displacement of residents, has alternately been welcomed and protested by nearby communities and property owners.

Some of the areas managed by the Port of Portland include: Kelly Point Park, portions of the Columbia Slough, Hayden Island, Swan Island, Portland International Airport.
