Today environmentalists and land-use planners debate the slough’s future. In 1993, a threatened lawsuit forced cleanup of the slough. During the same period, the Columbia Slough Watershed Council was created. The consensus-based Council has helped re-frame discussion between industrial and environmental groups and neighbors, as agency, industry, and community representatives address issues of habitat loss, pollution, and social inequality. Problems addressed include:

  • Landscape Change
  • Air, Water, and Industrial Pollution Commercial Development
  • Slough Management
  • Issues of Social Justice
