Communities around the region burst at the seams with Umatilla at the center of growth. Workers rushed from all over the U.S. into eastern Oregon to take advantage of jobs building nearby Hanford Nuclear Reservation, the Umatilla Army Depot, dams, bridges, homes. schools, and hospitals. The population rose from26,030 in the county to 41,703 between 1940 and 1950.
