The celebration held in the Spring started with work projects, such as lawn raking and laying side walks, and would conclude with a picnic. Van Doren, designed by J. K. Dow & D. Z. Hubbell was built in 1908 (at a cost of $25,000) as the "domestic economy" building. At the time it was the only structure west of Chicago devoted entirely to Home Economics courses. Named for Ms. Nancy L. Van Doren (the first building on campus named after a woman) professor of English at the start of WSU.
