College Station, 1930

The College Station was built in 1926; it was on Thatuna Street and was eventually torn down (along with the white building to the right of it, which was the music conservatory informally known as Agony Hall) in 1964 to make room for the construction of Kimbrough Hall. College Station originally housed the campus post office on the first floor, and the YMCA on the second. After the post office moved into the CUB in 1952, this became the Human Relations Center, and even later it housed research primates.

5. Bohler Gym, interior, 1936 Student Strike A photograph of the interior of Bohler Gym, WSU Building #11, packed with students during the 1936 student strike. Student strikers listen to their protest leader's report on Pres. Holland's response to their demands. Named for Fred Bohler, the nationally known WSU Coach and Director of Athletics who devoted forty-two years to physical education and sports at WSU. Bohler gym has played a significant role in the history of Cougar sports. Housing a basketball court, swimming pool handball courts and offices, it still has an important role in WSU athletics. This massive red brick building is ornamented with terra cotta and cut stone. The Renaissance Revival window surrounded with alternating plain and broken pediments are surprisingly opulent. The original entrance with sculptural decoration faced west. The architect, Stanley Smith, was the second University architect. Between 1924 and 1947, he completed fourteen major buildings at WSU. Bohler was the first of the three athletics buildings he built on the north side of the campus including Hollingbery Fieldhouse, and Smith Gym.

9. Candlelight ceremony, undated A candle-lit vigil, pageant, or ceremony of some sort, on the Washington State College (later Washington State University) campus. The reason for the ceremony is current lost to history; it appears to be a solemn or serious issue (no one is smiling), and seems to be happening during moderately warm weather (no coats). A penciled note of uncertain origin says this is 1937; nothing in the hair or dress styles seems to contradict that possibility.
