The Students Book Corporation (Bookie) was erected in 1923 at a cost of $29,185. Financed by the Associated Students, the original wood framed building with exterior brick stood in the site of the present Bookie. In addition to textbooks, the Bookie also contained the campus coffee shop. Inside a long soda fountain with levers provided students with fountain drinks, ice cream, coffee; and a dozed high-backed booths places to sit. In 1954, the original structure was razed and a new Bookie was build for $348,600, again financed by the Associated Students.

19. Columbia House, 1951 This view is likely taken from Lower Drive, looking south, or south-southwest, back at the State College of Washington campus. The two-story complex in the center left is Columbia House, which was temporary student and faculty housing put in after World War II. Columbia House (the whole complex was generally referred to in the singular) only existed from 1946/1947 until 1954. Once torn down, a football practice field (Columbia field) was installed there and remained until Beasley Coliseum was built here in the 1970s. The adjacent single story buildings to the left are North Fairway student housing.

23. Compton Union Building (CUB), ground breaking, 1950 A Photograph of President Wilson M. Compton shoveling dirt in a ground breaking ceremony for the new Compton Union Building. Dignitaries stand in the background. The brick structure visible in the background through the pine trees is one of the oldest campus reservoirs. Built during the earliest days of WSU, the reservoir was no longer in use by the 1930s. It was razed during the construction of the CUB. Designed by John Maloney in modern functional style, the Compton Union Building (CUB) was built in 1951 at a cost of $3 million and named for Wilson Compton, WSU President 1944 to 1951. The CUB was financed by the Regents through bond issues totaling $2,613,000, with the remaining funds contributed by the Associated Students (ASSCW). In 1969, a major renovation added an additional floor to the building including hotel rooms.

32. Alpha Chi Omega, 1955 Alpha Chi Omega sorority house, located northwest of the old Bookie site at 904 Thatuna (original address system). This was apparently built circa 1925-1925 (ACO occupied it in the 1925-1926 school year). They moved out somewhere between 1958 and 1960, and the building was sold to the Presbyterian Synod. Renamed Koinonia House and then Interfaith House, it served as home to various campus religious groups and unofficial campus student organizations. Washington State University approved its purchase in 2014.

56. Agronomy Seed House, ca. 1957 Though undated, we think this photo dates from 1957 or so, between the 1956 completion of this building and a 1958 extension on the far end. The Agronomy Seed House was designed by the Lawrence Kabush firm and cost $100,000, plus the $68,000 addition in 1958. It was originally described as being designed as a burglar-proof “bank” for seed stocks. It is located on the south side of Grimes Way, across from Alumni Way.
